Chris Eubank Jnr was
warned on Friday by former world middleweight champion Darren Barker that his
title challenger Arthur Abraham could end the Brighton fighter's roadshow on
Saturday night, as the 27-year-old defends his
International Boxing Organisation super middleweight crown at the SSE Arena,
Wembley.
The two fighters
weighed in at Wembley on Friday just before the area was taken over by the Floyd Mayweather vs Conor
McGregor world tour, ahead of their contest in Las Vegas on August 26.
Barker, who won the
same IBF crown which Abraham, a former two weight world champion, held for four
years, says Eubank is up against the most experienced opponent of his career
and must be wary of the Armenian’s power and ring craft.
“I do give Arthur
Abraham a real chance against Eubank because he brings so much experience at
the very top level of the sport. You can’t buy that type of knowledge,"
said Barker, who now runs his own fitness gym in Aldgate, East London.
"It
is a cracking match-up because we have the young, up-and-coming fighter against
the ageing warrior and I know Abraham is a very proud boxer.” "Abraham has
been in with some very big lads and stood up to all of them. He has been in the
ring with the likes of Carl Froch and Andre Ward and not flinched, so Eubank is
up against a very tough customer."
Eubank has pledged to
knock Abraham out, though the durable veteran, now 37, has only been stopped
once in 51 contests, but an even greater prize awaits the Briton with victory:
a march into the 12st division by joining the World Boxing Super Series for the
inaugural Muhammad Ali Trophy.
Eight
super-middleweights have been signed up for the Ali Trophy who will share $50
million (£38.4m) in prize money - with a separate eight-man cruiserweight
tournament - similar to the one which made stars of Froch and Ward six years
ago in the Classic Super Sixes.
Victory would ensure
Eubank's admission into the final spot in the revolutionary elimination
tournament which already features WBA 'Super' champion George Groves, rising
Liverpool fighter Callum Smith, who will fight for the WBC Diamond
Championship, former world champion Juergen Braehmer and undefeated challengers
Erik Skoglund, Jamie Cox, Avni Yildirim and Rob Brant.
This will be the test
for Eubank's ability and power. Abraham has lost rarely in his career - five
times in all - and only to elite level opponents.
Although Abraham tends
to be one-paced, this is the fight in which we will find out just how good
Eubank is going to be. If he is smart, he will use footwork to retain his
title. Eubank's energy, speed and youth ought to give him the advantage over
twelve hard rounds, but he may have to go to the trenches with the ultra-tough
Armenian to get his hand raised.
