The Russians won 6-4 4-6 6-3 before selling the night session
of nearly 24,000 people in New York. Sharapova, 30, played her first game in the Grand Slam as she
completed a 15-month doping suspension.
The 2006 champion and former world number one needed a
template to enter the main draw, as he took the 146th place. When his name was drawn next to Halep in the first round, he
created a contest that was more like a Grand Slam decision than an opening.
In two hours and 44 minutes, sharapova on the highest steps
of the racket before Halep's speed, and 60 winners were decisive, despite 64
errors.
"You never know what you'll feel until you win this
game, but everything you're going through is worth it for now," said
Sharapova, who now has a 7-0 record against hula in Romania.
"Sometimes you wonder why you put all the work, and
why."
On Wednesday, Sharapova will meet World No. 59 Hungarian
Timea Babos in the second round. Sharapova returned from his ban in April, but fought with hip
and forearm injuries, playing only once since May, and also rejected
substitutions of the French Open.
The United States Tennis Association was of a different
opinion, passing the Russian place in the main draw in New York, and took full
advantage.
John McEnroe was one of those who wondered if the Flushing
Meadows crowd would react badly to the 2006 champion, but received a warm
welcome when he went to the place.
This was Sharapova's first appearance in the "Grand
Slam" as she lost to Serena Williams in the quarterfinals of the
Australian Open in 2016, and enjoyed returning to the big stage. "It's prime time, baby, I love it," he joked later.
"I hug every minute, and I like it."
Halep was three times on the edge of the number one ranking
this year and was tough after playing 12 times on North American hard courts in
the last month but was eventually defeated by Sharapov.
The five-time Grand Slam champion advanced in the exciting
four first games, which lasted 27 minutes, and the winners of the blizzard
brought him the first set.
The same ferocious defeat seemed that with Sharapova it was
all the same with a score of 4: 1 in the second, but Khaled recovered with five
consecutive games to the level.
