German Marcel Kittel won the final sprint to take the second stage of the Tour de France as the British Thomas Zherzhan kept the yellow jersey.
Title defender Chris Froom crashed in wet conditions 30km from the end but finished without losing any of the advantages he scored on his rivals in the first stage.
Mark Cavendish was "happy" to finish fourth after an attack of glandular fever. Thomas, who collapsed with Froom, led by Stephen Kunga five seconds.
The Welshman, who won on Saturday and ended Saturday in the peloton, said: "We were all in a good position, but some guys quickly passed and slipped, and we all got off.
"Very quickly we get up, but anything can happen, and I do not take anything for granted. Tomorrow, the next day, and we will do everything possible for Frome."
The three-time champion Froom was one of several drivers involved in the crash as the squad sank in a circular motion while traveling 203.5 km from Dusseldorf to Liege, Belgium.
